ICC to decided Olympics cricket schedule

The Organizing Committee of the LA 2028 Olympics has stated that the qualification process for the six teams for the mega event will be decided by the ICC.

The massive update comes a day after the International Olympic Association confirmed the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 LA Olympics, with six teams to participate in the event from men's and women's categories.

The last time cricket was part of the Olympics was in 1900, and hence the sport is making a comeback after 128 years. 90 players will be participating from the men's and women's teams, with every team having 15 players each.

Cassey Wasserman, the chairman of LA 2028, responding to a query from Cricbuzz, confirmed that the qualification process for teams is always managed by International Federations (IFS) and for cricket, it will be the International Cricket Council (ICC).

"Organizing committees like LA28 aren't responsible for team qualifications in any sport, those are always handled by the IF," Cassey Wasserman, the chairman of LA 2028, told Cricbuzz on Thursday.

The USA, being the host of the Olympics, are expected to get a direct qualification. Answering a question about the selection process for the six teams allowed for participation, the LA Organizing Committee Chief confirmed that it will eventually be decided by the ICC. The USA is among the associate nations playing cricket. They recently played in the T20 World Cup 2024.

ICC Expected To Face Challenges In Preparing Schedule For LA 2028 Olympics

With only six teams allowed to participate in the LA 2028 Olympics, the ICC faces a challenge in deciding the qualification process. The criteria will be decided in due course, as the ICC will have to navigate through several concerns like rankings before making a final decision. Getting a window for staging qualifiers for the same might be an even tougher task given the limited time and cramped international calendar.

Several ICC officials met over a four-day meeting in Harare. The meeting started on April 10, and over the next four days, the various issues will be discussed.
