Gujarat Titans (GT) scored 224 runs in the first innings of the 51st match of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 2.
SRH’s decision to bowl first did not pay off as GT’s openers Sai Sudharsan (48 runs off 23 balls) and Shubman Gill (76 runs off 38 balls) went bonkers and batted aggressively right from the word go.
Sudharsan smashed five fours off Mohammad Shami in the third over, giving a glimpse of how the innings would unfold for the Titans.
Gill complemented his partner, also taking the attack to Pat Cummins in a captain versus captain duel. He hammered two fours and six off the Aussie as GT brought up their fifty by the end of the fourth over.
The powerplay yielded 82 runs. SRH’s leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari provided a relief to his side as he dismissed Sudharsan, who edged the ball to the gloves of Heinrich Klaasen in the seventh over.
Gill and Jos Buttler (64 runs off 37 balls) blasted a boundary-spree in the 10th over bowled by Shami. Gill hit two fours, notching up his third consecutive half-century of the season. Buttler tonked a six to take the Titans to 120 runs for the loss of one wicket in 10 overs.
The GT skipper continued his blitzkrieg, collecting two boundaries off Kamindu Mendis in the 11th over. Cummins dropped Buttler’s catch in the 12th over, adding to SRH’s woes.
The 13th over saw Gill getting run-out. After his dismissal, runs dried up for the next three overs. In this period, GT scored only a single boundary as SRH pulled back the run-rate.Â
Buttler finally teed off in the 17th over, smacking a six and a four off Ansari. The Englishman brought up his fifty in the process, his fifth this year.
15 runs came off the 18th over. Buttler belted a four and a six off Harshal Patel to take GT past 200 runs.
Cummins bowled a brilliant 19th over that also resulted in Buttler's wicket. Despite getting hit for a maximum by Shahrukh Khan (6* runs off 2 balls), the pacer gave away only nine runs.
Washington Sundar (21 runs off 16 balls) and Rahul Tewatia (6 runs off 3 balls) provided the finishing kick that GT needed in the final over. After nailing a six on the first ball, Sundar perished. Tewatia replicated the run of events and began his innings with a biggie which was followed by his dismissal. GT lost another wicket on the final delivery of the innings in the form of Rashid Khan (0 run off 1 ball).
Gujarat Titans eventually finished at 224 runs for the loss of six wickets after 20 overs.
