IPL 2025 Qualification Scenario: What Does Mumbai Indians Need To Do To Make It To IPL 2025 Playoffs?

Mumbai Indians IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time champions in the IPL, are currently placed second on the IPL 2025 points table. They started with two consecutive losses and now find themselves within touching distance of making the playoffs.

MI has been slow starters historically in the IPL. It panned out the same way in IPL 2025 as well. In the first half of the season, they lost more games than they won. Hardik Pandya, as the MI skipper, doubted his own form and the form of his teammates.

Rohit Sharma's form was the biggest concern for Mumbai Indians in the first half of the season. He had scores of 0, 8, 13, 17 and 18 runs, respectively, in his first five games. In his next five, he has scored two half-centuries and has regained his form to an extent. His scoring runs have put MI in a lot better place in the IPL 2025 points table.

Mumbai Indians' Performance Thus Far

MI started with two back-to-back losses in their first two games. They lost by four wickets against CSK and by 36 runs against GT. Against KKR, they found their first win of the campaign. They beat the Knight Riders by 8 wickets. In the next two games against LSG (lost by 12 runs) and RCB (lost by 12 runs), they once again lost two back-to-back games.

This was their story for the first half of the season. Experts and commentators did not back them to make the playoffs back then. However, recently, the Star Sports commentary panel backed MI to make it to the playoffs given their turnaround in the second half of the season.

In the second half of their season, between April 13 and 27, they won five games on the trot and in dominating fashion. They first DC by 12 runs, then SRH by four wickets, CSK by nine wickets, SRH by seven wickets, and LSG by 54 runs. They defeated teams like Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Chennai in the reverse fixture. Runs came from the bat of Suryakumar Yadav (427 runs in 10 games) and Ryan Rickelton (273 runs in 10 games) in the meantime. Meanwhile, Trent Boult (13 wickets in 10 games) and Hardik Pandya (12 wickets in 9 games) took wickets.

Qualification Scenarios For MI

Mumbai Indians are placed second on the IPL 2025 points table with 12 points from their first 10 games. They have four more league games remaining. Getting to 16 points will almost secure their playoff spot, while getting to 18 points can seal their spot for the playoffs. To get to 16, they need to win two out of their remaining four games, while they need to win three out of their last four games to get to 18 points and confirm their playoff spot. If they somehow get stuck at 14 points, then the NRR will come into question. MI's chances of qualification are almost close to 70 percent from here on.

MI's Remaining Fixtures

  • Rajasthan Royals (May 1)
  • Gujarat Titans (May 6)
  • Punjab Kings (May 11)
  • Delhi Capitals (May 15)
